I initially left a one-star review after discovering that a sympathy gift I had ordered for my sister-in-law, who had just unexpectedly lost her father, had stalled in transit and never arrived. I later removed that review at the request of the customer service manager, Brian, who told me that my review was inaccurate. Now that the situation has been fully resolved, I feel it is fair to share the complete and accurate experience.
I spent over $100 on this gift and received a shipping notification and tracking number shortly after ordering, so I trusted that it was on its way. More than a week later, after hearing nothing from my sister-in-law and receiving no notification from Sand & Sea that there was a problem, I checked the tracking myself and discovered that the package had been stalled in Illinois and had apparently gone missing.
Ironically, during that time, I did receive an email from the company asking me to review my experience.
What disappointed me most was not that the package was lost. I understand that shipping problems happen and that UPS ultimately had possession of the package. What earned this review was how the situation was handled afterward.
When Brian contacted me, his primary concern seemed to be that I remove my negative review because he considered it inaccurate. I would have expected the first response from a customer service manager to be something along the lines of, “I am so sorry this happened, especially given the circumstances surrounding this gift. Let me see what I can do to make this right.” Instead, I felt as though I was being corrected and asked to defend my disappointment.
I was then told an investigation with UPS would need to take place before it could be determined whether the package was truly lost and whether I qualified for a refund. Rather than wait through that process, I disputed the charge with my bank and received my money back within 24 hours.
In the meantime, I ordered a nearly identical sympathy gift elsewhere. I received multiple shipping updates and my sister-in-law had her gift within 48 hours before I even received confirmation from Sand & Sea that my original package had officially been deemed lost and that the refund process could begin.
I do appreciate that Brian ultimately followed up with me. However, the overall experience left me feeling that protecting the company from a negative review was treated with more urgency than helping a customer whose meaningful and time-sensitive gift had never arrived.
This wasn't just a random purchase to me. It was how I was trying to tell someone I love, during one of the worst moments of her life, that I was thinking about her. That is precisely the type of purchase this company sells, which makes compassionate and responsive customer service especially important.
I hope the company takes this feedback seriously and uses it as an opportunity to improve how situations like this are handled. Packages get lost. Mistakes happen. How a company treats its customers when something goes wrong is what ultimately defines the experience.
Unfortunately, based on mine, I would not order from Sand & Sea by Ashley again. Purchase at your own discretion.
It Was Never About the Review. It Was About the False Statements.
We respect every customer's right to leave a positive or negative review. Our concern was never the rating itself, and we never remove low reviews. Our concern was that your original review contained false statements.
Specifically, it stated that your order 'never shipped' and that you 'never received any notification.' Both statements were false. Your order shipped the next business day, a shipping confirmation email with your UPS tracking number was sent immediately, and UPS accepted and transported the package through multiple facilities before it became stalled in transit.
At no point did we ask you to remove your review because it was negative. We asked you to correct or remove the false statements because they did not reflect what actually happened.
We also opened a UPS investigation immediately and advised you that, once UPS completed its investigation, we would resolve the matter accordingly. Before that investigation was completed, you chose to file a chargeback with your credit card company. When we discovered that, we accepted the chargeback rather than asking you to continue waiting, even though we had already committed to resolving the issue.
We stand behind the facts, and we believe reviews should accurately reflect them.
